Learn Houdini for FREE

Free 3DBuzz Houdini Classroom

3DBuzz have started a free online Houdini Classroom that anyone can visit. This is a great opportunity to learn what must surely be one of the most hightly regarded software packages going - and all taught by the legendary educator Jason Busby (Buzz) himself!

  • Free Video Training designed to get students quickly up to speed with Houdini.
  • Classroom Forum.
  • Contests and Challenges - winners will have their work deconstructed and transposed into video tutorials allowing all participants to benefit.
  • More advanced video training to come (though this content will be charged for - but still dirt cheap!).

What is Houdini?

Houdini is a general-purpose 3D animation package (much in the way that Maya, 3ds Max and XSI are) and is developed by Side Effects Software. Historically, top studios from around the world have come to rely upon Houdini for creating some of the most demanding and accomplished visual-effects shots ever committed to film. Houdini's main draw is its groundbreaking procedural architecture which can be utilised to save time and money. It's now also becoming more and more an option for smaller facilities and individuals thanks to recent price restructuring and usability enhancements.

Side Effects provide a free noncommercial learning edition of Houdini called Houdini Apprentice which is ideal to learn with.

"Every once in a while we get a story at fxguide that indicates just how far and how fast the industry is moving. The post on Attila the Hun, directed by Gareth Edwards, is one of those stories. Edwards produced the 250 HD effects shots by himself in five months using After Effects and Photoshop. Averaging 2 shots a day, it was one man against the armies of Attila the Hun."
